USING SCOUTLANDER


Wayland Service Unit is moving to using Scoutlander to communicate with all troop members and families. However, it can only work if people know how to use it. So here are the basics.

This address gets you to the PUBLIC SITE, where you will find the publiclly available pages about the Troop and scouting.  Once you have an account, you can log in to see the Private Site from here.

 

To access our PRIVATE SITE, which contains information and photos only Service Unit members can see. An invitation and a password is required to access the private site. Everyone should already have gotten the invitation. You will have 5 days to accept the invitation. If you need a new invitation, email the site administrator (troop69199@gmail.com). Use the invitation to get to Scoutlander and log on. Tell it you want to stay logged on.

 

PRIVATE SITE:

 

My Profile. After selecting it you should see your name. Click Edit Profile in the upper right corner. You can add a second email address if you have morethan one. Scroll down until yousee Phone and Address and fill in your personal information so that other troop members can call you and find your house when necessary. (This is optional, you are not required to provide your contact information).  When you are finished, click Save in the bottom right corner.

If you would like the notices and reminders to go to a second email account for the same person, you can add it in MyProfile (see below). If you would like to add a second parent (which is a good idea), email the site administrator with the name and email address and ask for an invitation.

 

The Event Calendar is your link to all the activities in our Service Unit. When you click on Event Calendar, you get the calendar page for the current month. You can use the options on top to jump to any month you want, including past months. Clicking on an event brings you to a new page with the Event Info, Date and Time and date to RSVP by at the top. There is also a button for a Photo Album, to which you can upload and view photos of the event after it occurs, and download any photos you want. Please put your photos up so we can allsee. Leaders should put all events on the calendar. You will get a reminder two days ahead of time for any event that is applicable to you or your girl scout.

You find the list of Scout Participants when an RSVP is required. This is where you sign up for the event, or RSVP. Each scout invited (by troop or level) is listed alphabetically. Find your scout and click the on the blue Response link. Use the keys to indicate the number of Scouts, Siblings, and Adults planning to attend the event. Write any note needed in the box, and click Save. The total number of Scouts, Siblings, and Adults signed up will be at the bottom of the screen. Make sure to send in or bring your check if there is a cost.

 

Scroll down and find any Attachments related to the event. 

The Broadcast System allows you to send email to the whole troop, Juniors or Brownies Only, or selected individuals. Any parent can send email for scout purposes only. Begin by selecting your group or individuals. Next, you can link to an event on the calendar. Step 3 allows you to attach a file to your email. Once you Choose File, make sure to  Upload the file. In Step 4, yougive your email a Subject and write your message. You can Preview the finished email – it will actually sendyou a copy of the email. Then go back and click on Send Now.

 If you need someone’s address or phone number, do an Adult Search or a Scout Search. As long as that person has updated their profile, you will find home and cell phones and addresses. 

What are the requirements to join GirlScouts?

 Each Girl Scout Program level is by grade.

Daisies - Kindergarten-Grade 1

Brownies Grades 2-3

JuniorsGrades 4-5 

Cadettes Grades 6-8

Seniors Grades 9-10

Ambassadors Grades 11-12

 

What does Girl Scouting offer my daughter?

Girl Scouting offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness.  Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide girls through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement. Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, girls also learn honesty, responsibility, and respect.

How does participation in Girl Scouting affect participation in other activities?

The Girl Scout program is designed to complement many other extracurricular activities. Typical time commitment is one troop meeting and Service Unit event per month.

What are the responsibilities of a parent?

·Provide help and support for the troop.  Become CORI certified.

·Work with your daughter on advancement projects and activities.

·Attend troop meetings with your daughter and present her advancement awards to her at the troop meeting.

·Attend and assist with troop outings.

·Assist your daughter with the fundraising activities to help the troop.

Do Girl Scouts go camping?

Yes, camping, both in tents and lodges, are an important part of the Girl Scout experience.  There are many wonderful Girl Scout camps located throughout Eastern New England that are available for troops and families.  Summer camps offer girls a variety of activities that match their interests.  More on Girl Scout camping can be found at http://www.gsema.org/en/camp/our-camps.html

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts offers a multitude of programs and discounts to registered Girl Scouts and their families.  Some examples include discounts on Red Sox, Celtics and other sporting events, Duck boat tours, plays, movies and other special events.  Seasonal activities like snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, boating, high ropes and much, much more.  

How much is it going to cost?

The annual Girl Scout registration fee is $40 and includes both the National and Council fees.  Troops typically begin in September/October and run through the school year.

Other costs include uniforms, troop dues, and some activity fees including those for camps. Youth members participate in two fund-raising activities (fall products such as magazines and chocolate, and cookies in the spring), which helps to cover troop supplies, and other activities.

·If you can't make it to the store,and are comfortable specifying your daughter's size, they will also take phone orders and ship. Alternatively, you can order everything online from GSEMA.

How often are the meetings?

Girl Scouts usually meet in their troops once or twice each month. Beyond that, it depends on the troop: a troop may hold a special activity, such as a service project or visit to a local museum in place of one of the meetings or in addition to the meetings.  Likewise, the Troop may conduct a special event such as a campout, or service activity as an additional event, rather than a substitute for its monthly Troop meeting. 

 How can I learn more?

The best way to learn about what a Girl Scout really does is to talk with a Girl Scout who is engaged in the program.  Alternatively, you can learn more about the Girl Scout program by selecting"Contact Service Unit" (above) and asking questions, or leave your phone number to receive a call from the Service Unit Coordinator.
