What is Scout Sunday?

The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910, based on the program started by Lord Baden Powell in England on August 1, 1907. Scout Sunday was added to the Scout celebration in the middle 1940's. Scout Sunday is always the Sunday preceding February 8th, unless the 8th is a Sunday in which case the 8th would be Scout Sunday. The Saturday following February 8th is Scout Sabbath.

The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting and to allow Scouts to live out their "Duty to God" pledged each week.  On Scout Sunday, uniformed Scouts and Scouters across the country will greet the congregation, participate in worship services, receive religious awards, and conduct service projects to benefit their place of worship.  The goal: To thank the religious institution for their service as the unit's chartered organization.

Religious Emblems Programs

A variety of religious emblems programs are used by the Boy Scouts of America to encourage youth to learn about their faith and to recognize adults who provide significant service to youth in a religious environment.  These religious programs are created, administered, and awarded by the various religious groups, not the BSA, but each program must be recognized by the BSA.

The award given by the religious organization consists of a unique medal for each program--usually only worn on formal occasions. The award is also recognized by the wear of an embroidered square knot emblem-silver on purple for youth and purple on silver for adults. The knot emblem is universal in that it does not represent any specific religion or religious award program. Each medal is designed and produced by the religious institution, while the knot emblems are produced by the BSA.

How Do We Get Started on These Programs?

1. Youth members must obtain the specific booklet for their religion.
2. Check with your council store or contact the religious organization directly (see the chart on this site).
3. Each youth member needs his or her own booklet to document progress.
4. Some religions offer adult manuals for counselors and mentors.
5. Parents must review the program guidelines.
6. Some programs require participants to be official "members" of the religious institution.
7. Age/grade requirements vary from program to program.
8. Each program sets its own guidelines as to who may serve as counselor. Some programs require clergy to serve as counselors; other programs allow parents or other family members to serve as counselors.
9. Families should talk to their religious leaders and show them the booklet before beginning any program.
10. Most programs require that they be completed under the auspices of that religious organization.
11. Many programs require the signature of the local religious leader.
12. The youth member needs to complete the requirements, obtain the proper signatures, and follow the instructions to order the emblem.
13. These emblems are not available from your local council store (follow the instructions in your booklet).
14. The emblem should be presented in a meaningful ceremony, preferably in the member's religious institution.
